Fourth Grade, Bones

Directions to student:

Select two of the skeletons. Compare and contrast these two skeletons, using at least three details.

Student Work A

"The cat and the monkey are alike and different in many ways. They both have hard skulls to protect the brain. The monkey and the cat both have a strong rib cage as well to protect the heart and the lungs. Their tails are both long but the monkeys acts more like an extra leg. The cat only eats met though the chew grass. The monkey eats everything. The monkeys legs are like all arms for grabbing things and cats have 4 legs."

Level 4: student correctly gives more than the required number of details, including information about function (note that the diet comments probably could have been based on these images).

Student Work B

"I am choosing the rabbit and the cat. The rabbit and the cat are alike because they are mammals. They are also alike because they have a back bone One more comparence is that they have a tail to direct them when they are catching their prey.

The rabbit and the cat are different because the rabbit's tail is short and the cat's tail is long. They are also different because they have different teeth to eat different things. One more contrastence is that the cat runs with its long legs and rabbit hops with its short legs that bent when it hops."

Level 3: student gives several details, of which three are clear (backbone, tails (but rabbits don't catch prey, and teeth).  This is a Level 3 but not a strong one because of some of the details are weak, such as the length of legs is not that different, but the structure of the joints clearly is different.

Student Work C

"I picked the monkey and cat because a cat and monkey has long tales to help them balance. Both of there vartabray bind to be flexable. There arms bind so they could move faster.

Both cat and monkey can clim but a monkey could swing from tree to tree. A monkey has a bigger skul than a cat. A cat can run faster than a monkey.."

Level 2: student provided two facts which are based on the skeletons of the two animals.

Student Work D

"I picked a rabbit and cat because they both have a lot of thing alike and different. One simmality is that cats and rabbits both are viterbrats. Another simalarity is that there both have small skull."

Level 1: student provides one comparison based on the skeletons.
