First Grade, Weather

Directions to student:

Parts of weather are sky, precipitation, and wind. Circle one picture in each box to show today’s weather. Draw a picture of you outside in today’s weather.

Student Work A

Level 3: student correctly circled the icons. The writing is good and supports the drawing but does not discuss the wind.

Student Work B

"It is cloudy outside and thirie is some wind and thirie is no precipitation. And I I'm looking at the sky."

Level 3: student correctly circled the icons. The writing is good, details wind, precipitation, and clouds and supports the drawing but does not go much further, such as discussing the temperature.

 Student Work C

"Hi I yild my frieds cadno't herd me I yud louder! And thay herd me. It is a little bit sune out sid. I'm saing hi to my frieds."

Level 2: student correctly circled the icons. The writing details only the sun, but the difficulty in hearing can be related to the wind. The drawing shows the tree branches, which we use to judge the amount of wind.  Drawing also shows the clouds and a bit of the sun - it was a cloudy but very bright day.

Student Work D

"I'm playing in the puddle (dictated to the teacher)." (Child cannot write.)

Level 2: student correctly circled the icons. A different day than the others above, the rain drops are clearly shown in the drawing as is the puddle. The tree branches are clear, although it is again hard to judge here how much wind there is.
