Second Grade, Sun, Moon, and Earth
Directions to student:
1. Label each drawing as Sun, Earth, and Moon. 2. Draw details to show the surface of each object. 3. Choose one object and write at least two facts about it.Student Work A
"The earth is made up of 80% water and 20%
land. The earth is the only planet with life on it. The Sun has dark spots on it called
sun spots. The sun is made out of gas and rocks. The Moon has lots of craters on it. The
moon is made out of dust and rock."
Level 4: student correctly labeled and detailed the drawing and gave more than the
required number of facts, generally all correct.
Student Work B
"The sun is very hot but there are
thhings called sun spots and they are a lot cooler. You could fit 1,000,000 Erath's in the
sun if it was hold."
Level 4: student correctly labeled and detailed the drawing and gave 3
clear facts about the Sun.
Student Work C
"The Earth has land and warter. Is is
round it is biger then the Moon and smaller then the sun. It is in the Mindle of the sun
and Moon in the picher. It is in the mindle with zise."
Level 3: student correctly labeled and detailed the drawing. The students writing
gave two basic facts (water, bigger than Moon). The facts are basic ones and we decided
the added labels on the drawing "Moon has craters" and "sun has sun
sposts" made it an acceptable 3; the writing did not express sufficient knowledge to
warrant a 4.
Student Work D
"The sun is hot. You can not go nexe to
it."
Level 2: student correctly labeled and detailed the drawing but only gave one fact.
