BPS Elementary Science Exemplars Project

Teacher’s Page

Grade: Five
Topic: Microorganisms and Cells
Instructional Materials: Cells & Microbes (DW)
*Special Instructions: None
MA LS (96 version): Characteristics of Organisms (5-8): Observe and explain that in single cells there are common features that all cells have as well as differences that determine their function. Compare the features of plant and animal cells noting similarities and differences.
MA LS (01 version): Grade 6 – 8 Life Science: Compare and contrast plant and animal cells, including major organelles (cell membrane, cell wall, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, mitochondria, vacuoles).
BPS LS: Some organisms are made of a collection of similar cells. Some organisms’ cells vary greatly in appearance and it may be inferred that these have very different roles in the organism
Technology Connection: What are cells? Animation and audio explanation http://www.brainpop.com/health/immune/cells/index.weml

Student uses a Word template. (See the templates section.)

*The teacher should encourage students to elaborate, give more than the minimum, and strive for a Level 4.

A student response correctly giving the minimum number of responses or details is a Level 3.

In order to achieve a Level 4, a student must go above and beyond what is asked. For example, the student gives more than the required minimum or makes additional connections.
