BPS Elementary Science Exemplars Project

Teacher’s Page

Grade: Five
Topic: Chemistry
Instructional Materials: Mixtures & Solutions (FOSS) OR Chemical Tests (STC)
*Special Instructions: None
MA LS (96 version): Properties of Matter: Show and describe how change in a material may be either physical, such as changes in state or appearance, or chemical, such as changes in composition. Students show ways in which some properties of a material may change and others stay the same when a material experiences some external change.
MA LS (01 version): Grade 3 – 5 Physical Science: Compare and contrast solids, liquids, and gases based on the basic properties of each state of matter. Grade 6 – 8 Physical Science: Differentiate between physical changes and chemical changes.
BPS LS: Substances possess characteristic physical and chemical properties
Technology Connection: Student uses a Word template. (See the templates section.)

*The teacher should encourage students to elaborate, give more than the minimum, and strive for a Level 4.

A student response correctly giving the minimum number of responses or details is a Level 3.

In order to achieve a Level 4, a student must go above and beyond what is asked. For example, the student gives more than the required minimum or makes additional connections.

You are given: water, vinegar, baking soda, and salt.

  1. Select two of these materials to put into a cup to produce a physical change. Give at least one reason why this was a physical change.
