BPS Elementary Science Exemplars Project

Teacher’s Page

Grade: Five
Topic: Astronomy
Instructional Materials: Solar Systems & Beyond (DW)
*Special Instructions: A minimal survival list includes water, food, oxygen, space suit (or similar specific protection). Items such as a toothbrush are not needed for survival and therefore are not acceptable.
MA LS (96 version): Earth and Space (5 – 8): Recognize and describe that the Solar System contains the central Sun, the known planets, their moons, and many asteroids, meteors, and comets that orbit the Sun. Describe ways in which the planets differ in size, temperature, composition, surface features, and number of rings and moons. Use this information to determine those conditions that make the Earth the only planet suitable for life.
MA LS (01 version): Grade 3 – 5 Earth Science: Recognize that the earth is part of a system called the "solar system" that includes the sun (a star), planets, and many moons. The earth is the third planet from the sun in our solar system.
BPS LS: In our solar system there are nine planets and one large star called the Sun. The Earth is one of the several planets that orbit the sun and the moon orbits around the Earth

Student uses a Word template. (See the templates section.)

*The teacher should encourage students to elaborate, give more than the minimum, and strive for a Level 4.

A student response correctly giving the minimum number of responses or details is a Level 3.

In order to achieve a Level 4, a student must go above and beyond what is asked. For example, the student gives more than the required minimum or makes additional connections.
