BPS Elementary Science Exemplars Project

Teacher’s Page

Grade: Three
Topic: Earth’s Water
Instructional Materials: Earth’s Water (DW)
*Special Instructions: When giving students instructions to answer this question, emphasize that they should follow the water ALL THE WAY to the glass. The part in the prompt about the water cycle causes many students to stop with that part.

Copy the lined section (at the back) on the back.

MA LS (96 version): Properties and Changes in Earth’s Materials: Observe and describe that change is something that happens to earth materials. Investigate conditions in which water can be a liquid, a solid, or a gas.
MA LS (01 version): Grade 3 – 5 Earth Science: Describe how water on earth cycles in different forms and in different locations including underground and in the atmosphere.
BPS LS: The water cycle is a never ending path water follows as it evaporates into the air, condenses into clouds, and returns to Earth as precipitation
Technology Connection: Animation and audio explanation of the Water Cycle http://www.brainpop.com/science/ecology/watercycle/index.weml

*The teacher should encourage students to elaborate, give more than the minimum, and strive for a Level 4.

A student response correctly giving the minimum number of responses or details is a Level 3.

In order to achieve a Level 4, a student must go above and beyond what is asked. For example, the student gives more than the required minimum or makes additional connections.
